Do You Need an International Driving Permit to Drive in Georgia?

Georgia recognizes most foreign licences for short stays. Here's when an International Driving Permit helps and what documents you actually need to rent.

Caucasus Travel Guide

For most visitors the short answer is no — Georgia recognizes national driving licences for stays of up to one year, so you can rent and drive on the licence you already hold. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a helpful extra, not a legal must, for short trips.

When an IDP helps

If your licence is not in Latin script (for example, Chinese, Arabic, or Georgian), an IDP gives police and rental staff a readable translation. It removes friction at checkpoints, so bring one if it is easy to get.

What you actually need to rent

  • Your national driving licence, held for at least one year.
  • A passport that matches the booking.
  • A payment card for the deposit.

Long stays

Planning to live in Georgia? After 12 months you should convert to a Georgian licence. For a two-week road trip, your home licence plus an optional IDP is all WeRent asks for.
